burned to the ground. Rebuilt a year later, it was named after the mythological Phoenix, a bird reborn from its own ashes. Verdi’s ‘La Traviata’ was performed here for the first time. During the Austrian occupation the patriotic composer became a national hero. His name was shouted by the public in this theatre: V.E.R.D.I., Vittorio Emanuele Re D’Italia, a reference to the first king of united Italy.
